The Salem High soccer teams swept Lord Botetourt rivals last week to open the season. The boys took a 2-1 win in Daleville and the girls shut out LB, 4-0, on the Spartan Field pitch.
Botetourt scored first in the boys’ about 10 minutes into the match. Salem battled back and tied the score off a cross from Elijah Clark that went off an LB player and into the net.
The Spartans took the lead about 15 minutes into the second half on a great shot from Clark, assisted by Gavin Horner. Freshman keeper Lin Daniel had four saves in goal.
“The guys battled hard and came away with a good team win to start off our 2026 campaign,” said coach David Atkins.
The girls hosted LB and Aly Price had a big opening day with a three-goal hat trick for the Sparans. Emma Elder also had a goal and Julie Crumpacker and Keeley Prosser had assists for Salem. Karis Guy was in goal for the shutout.
Both teams are off this week for spring break, returning April 2nd to play Cave Spring teams. The girls will be at Cave Spring and the boys will have their home opener at Spartan Field.
