The Glenvar track team opened the season last Saturday in Blacksburg and the Spartans will get underway this week. Salem had a home meet on Wednesday and the Spartans are entered in the Terrier Team Challenge in Vinton this Saturday, beginning at 9:30 am.
Glenvar ran in the Blacksburg Invitational last Saturday and had some strong early season performances.
Joey Loder took first in the 110 hurdles, setting a new meet record, and also won the 300 hurdles. He state qualified in both events. The boys 4×100 relay consisting of Brian Mateo, Ranger Swanson, Tre Dawyot and Loder also won and state qualified. The boys 4×400 team took first with Ben Brown, Grayson Harris, Asher Faught and Evan Harris.
For the girls, Aidan Beverly was second in the 200 and ran on the winning 4×100 relay team with Meena Chen, Kayleigh McDonald and Sophia Hammersley. Beverly also anchored the winning 4×400 team with Anna Hall, McDonald and Raya Bryson. The girls 4×800 team of Hall, Bryson, Lauren Smith and Everly Shanks was runnerup.
“We had a pretty good turnout and it was actually a beautiful day up there in Blacksburg for a change,” said Glenvar coach Neil Swanson. “Typically this meet is either windy, rainy, or just cold, but that’s to be expected for these early season meets.”
