Highlanders get first “on field” win

Jaycee Nunley pitched a complete game in Glenvar’s win over Patrick Henry.

The Glenvar softball team picked up a much-needed win Monday when the Highlanders hosted Patrick Henry and pulled out a 6-1 victory. With the win Glenvar is now 2-10 on the season but their other win was a forfeit over Martinsville, so this was their first one on the dirt.

Freshman Jaycee Nunley pitched for Glenvar and got a much-deserved win. She allowed just two hits and struck out seven in a complete game effort after allowing the Patriots a first inning run.

Glenvar still trailed 1-0 into the bottom of the seventh but the offense exploded at that point, banging out seven hits for six runs in the inning. The Highlanders finished with 12 hits and five players had two each, Audrey Moles, Paisley Hodge, Zella Hayes, Haley Leginus and Chloe Maxey.

It was a sweet win the Highlanders, who lost to PH in Roanoke last week in eight innings, 8-7. Glenvar scored three runs in the seventh inning to send the game into extra frames before the Pats scored in the eighth for a walk-off win.

Paisley Hodge and Nunley shared time on the mound allowing nine hits, striking out five and walking five. Moles, Hayes and Hodge all had triples in the game and Hayes had three hits.

Last Thursday the girls were at Patrick County and dropped a 10-0 decision. Glenvar was held to three hits, one each by Hodge, Hayes and Nunley. Hodge started on the rubber and took the loss.

Glenvar will be back home on Friday to host Floyd County. The Buffaloes were undefeated before losing a close game to James River last week.
