Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle Schools will go head-to-head on the diamond and pitch today. Lewis will host the Highlanders in baseball and boys’ soccer and the Wolverines will be at Glenvar in softball and girls’ soccer.
On Monday Glenvar teams played William Byrd and Salem teams took on Cave Spring. Lewis baseball beat the Squires on Billy Sample Field, 8-4. Walter Elliott and Jahiem France each collected two hits for Andrew Lewis and the Wolverines stole nine bases.
Glenvar ran into a buzz saw at Green Hill Park against William Byrd, falling 9-0. “We didn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position on offense, and missed some key opportunities on defense to get out of sticky situations,” said Glenvar coach Kirby Hamilton.
In softball Lewis their 8th game of the season with a 13-2 win at Cave Spring. Kaylee Crosswhite earned her eighth pitching win and Savannah McCormick had two hits. Glenvar lost 10-0 to Byrd with Corra Hayes and Ally McGhee getting the sole hits for Glenvar. Ally is now riding a 10 game hit streak while reaching base in last 12 games in a row.
In boys’ soccer Lewis downed Cave Spring 2-1. Matias Duque scored in the first half and Cameron Burns broke the tie in the second half for the win. “The defense played one of its best all around games of the season,” said coach Thad Snyder.
The Glenvar boys defeated William Byrd, 5-0. Mohammad Neyazi scored two goals and James Schruth scored one. Jacob Nichols and Benny Carter each scored their first goals of the season while Aiden Driver and the defense got another shut out.
The Lewis girls’ soccer team shut out Cave Spring 2-0. The first goal was from Lilian Richerson assisted by Naziah Belcher in the first half. In the second half, Naziah Belcher scored to push the lead two goals to none.
Glenvar’s girls won at Byrd, 5-1. Ava Hall, Kami Dawyot, Abigail Alexander and Sydney Clemens all scored for Glenvar. The Highlander defense allowed Byrd just two shots on goal.
