Tuesday’s game was scoreless at the half, but Salem’s Anthony Rugama found the net three times after intermission for a hat trick as the Spartans pulled away. The defense was also stout, as keeper Lin Daniel needed make just two saves.
Last Friday the Spartans lost for just the second time this season when visiting Patrick Henry shut out the Salemites on Spartan Field, 2-0. The first half was a scoreless defensive battle but the Patriots were able to find the net 10 minutes into the second half, then added an insurance goal with 13 minutes on the scoreboard clock.
“We had chances to get back in it but did not capitalize,” said Salem coach David Atkins. “Disappointing result to a game I felt we played very well. It was one of our best performances of the year as a team and something we can build off of. Elijah Clark and Anthony Rugama played extremely well but in the end we came up short.”
The Spartans are now off for a week, returning to the pitch next Tuesday for a game at Cave Spring. They host Lord Botetourt on Wednesday, April 29.
