The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse came to an end with a loss to Salisbury University in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Seagulls defeated RC, 19-3, in Salisbury, Maryland last Saturday.
The Maroons couldn’t break through offensively, scoring just one goal in the first half and two in the second. The Seagulls took advantage of the Maroon scoring lull to extend their lead to 11-1 at the half and pull away for the victory.
Patrick Cullen scored twice to lead the Maroons while Preston Shields netted the other Maroon goal. Tyler Schmelzer and Julian Kammerman handed out assists.
Weston Hammond scooped six ground balls defensively and Ike Dutton had four. David Hamilton made four saves in the goal for the Maroons.
The loss followed a 22-7 win over Marymount University in the opening round of the tournament. The Maroons hosted that game in Salem and dominated the game, leading 15-2 at the half.
Kammerman led the Maroons with five goals against Marymount. Schmelzer had four, Clayton Berwick had three and three others scored twice, Cullen, Charlie Ryan and Dell Vidunas.
The Maroons finished the season with a 14-6 record under first year coach Grant Zimmerman. The win over Marymount was RC’s first NCAA Tournament win since 2013.
