The Salem High baseball team was scheduled to open Region 4D play on Wednesday of this week at Blacksburg High School. Results were too late for publication, but the winner will advance to the South Division final next Monday.
Region 4D is split into South and North Divisions, with Salem in the South. The Spartans are the third seed and they were at second seeded Blacksburg Wednesday. Senior Zach Bocock was scheduled to start on the mound for Salem, most likely against Blacksburg ace Sam Szefc.
Wednesday’s winner will advance to Monday’s game against the winner of a game between top-seeded Jefferson Forest and E.C. Glass. If Jefferson Forest wins that game they would host, but if Glass pulled the upset the Salem-Blacksburg winner would host Monday’s game. That winner, in turn, will play the North Division winner on June 3rd for the Region 4D championship.
The All-River Ridge District was announced this week and Salem was well-represented. First teamers were Bocock at pitcher, Aiden Poff at catcher and Mason Hale in the outfield. Chase Rutledge and Brayden White were honorable mention at second base and shortstop.
