Orie’s Story, by Virginia author Gail Tansill Lambert is now available in print and e-book editions. This historical novel was based on a memoir written in 1936 by W.L. Andrews,the son of Dr. Orianna Moon Andrews. She was a Virginia tobacco princess in Albemarle County who became a Confederate medical doctor, witnessing the Civil War firsthand as it ravaged the Commonwealth and destroyed her world. Combining access to family papers and permission to write the story of Dr. Orie, the author has created a vivid narrative of her life, which adds a seldom-told chapter to Virginia’s history. W.L. Andrews, born on the tobacco plantation called Viewmont, settled in the Roanoke Valley circa the turn of the Twentieth Century, living for a while on land he purchased called View Mont in north Roanoke County adjacent to the Roanoke Country Club. He was a leading businessman and a State Senator representing Roanoke’s Fourth District.
Gail Tansill’s award-winning writing has included travel, history, and fiction, appearing in numerous publications, including such organizations as the Daughters of the American Revolution and National Public Radio. She taught Latin in Montgomery County Public Schools, raised four children, and lives in Roanoke. Her great-grandfather Robert Tansill resigned his commission in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Confederate Army as a colonel.
