Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle Schools will go head-to-head in three games today at various locations. The Highlanders will host the Wolverines in baseball at Green Hill Park and softball, tentatively scheduled for the middle school field. Lewis will host Glenvar in boys’ soccer after the girls played earlier in the week.

Lewis’ baseball team traveled to William Byrd on Monday, where the Wolverines dropped a 6-1 decision. The top of the first was a productive one for the Wolverines, with the visitors grabbing an early 1-0 lead thanks to a Chase Greer single which plated Chauncey Logan, Jr., who had walked to lead off the game.  The inning ended with a double-play liner, which robbed Lewis of a chance to score more runs.

Byrd tied the game in their half of the inning against Lewis starter Hunter Bayne.  The Wolverines had chances to score in the second, but again, good defense aided the Terriers.

Timely hitting in the third by Byrd pushed across four runs, and the Terriers added another in the fourth to make the final 6-1 in favor of the home team.

“We had scoring chances a couple times, but failed to tally” said Lewis coach Greg Gallion.  “We didn’t come up with runs when we needed them and we didn’t take care of the ball.  Tip your cap to the Terriers.  They wanted it more than us, today.”

The Lewis softball team hosted Byrd at the Moyer Complex and dropped a 9-3 decision. Lewis scored scored three in the first inning and were down just 4-3 until the last inning when Byrd hung five more on the board.

“We struggled in the last inning with passed balls,” said Lewis coach Sarah Beth Walton. “Lily Lawson and Ella Overstreet are both out for a couple weeks due to injury and that hurts as they are leaders and good players.”

Kennedy Scales had two diving catches in the outfield and Ryan Long had another diving catch in right field.

“We need to hit the entire game and stop swinging at bad pitches,” said Walton.

In soccer, the Lewis boys won at home against Byrd Monday, 2-1. Both goals were scored on corners by Matteo Collins and Riley Baksic.

“The team fought hard for the last ten minutes to preserve the victory,” said Lewis coach Perry Manning.

The boys are now 3-0-1 on the season.

The girls played in Vinton and dropped a 2-0 game.

“We got a bunch of shots in the first half, but their goalie was awesome,” said Lewis coach Bob Palleria. “We are getting better, but Monday wasn’t our day.  Byrd got three good shots in the second half and scored on two of them.”

Next week the middle school teams are off for spring break.
