The local middle school spring teams will be going head-to-head today, Thursday, as Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle School will play each other in base-ball, softball and both boys’ and girls’ soccer.
The baseball game is scheduled for 5:30 pm today at Billy Sample Field in Salem. Lewis was 2-2 after defeating Northside, 13-1, and Cave Spring, 9-8, in the past week, and the Wolverines were scheduled to host Central Academy on Tuesday.
The Cave Spring win was a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change several times before Lewis prevailed. Crayton Boger earned the win on the mound in relief of starter Nick Winterer, who fanned six Squires.
Meanwhile, Glenvar is looking to right the ship after a 21-0 loss to William Byrd at Green Hill Park Monday. Xavier Cash, Ryland Marshall and Raylan Franklin had hits for the Highlanders.
Today’s softball game is scheduled for 5 pm at Glenvar. The Highlanders dropped an 11-4 decision to Byrd on Monday in Vinton despite an inside-the-park home run by McKenna Tice that scored two runs. Sophie Armes had a triple for Glenvar.
Lewis scored 11 first inning runs in a 15-0 shutout win over Cave Spring Middle at the Moyer Complex Monday. Ava Price hit an inside-the-park home run in the first inning scoring three, then doubled on her second at bat of the inning. Ava walked in the second with the bases loaded for her fourth RBI. Daisy Robinson also had an inside-the-park home run and drove in five runs.
Robinson and Chloe Freeman pitched two innings each to record the shutout, combing for 11 strikeouts while only giving up three hits. That lifted Lewis to 2-2 on the season with a game at Central Academy still to be played on Tuesday.
The boys’ soccer teams will play on the field behind Lewis today with a 5:30 pm scheduled kick-off. Lewis was off Monday after downing Northside at home last Thursday, 5-0. Miles Biscotti had two goals and Ever Herrera, Isaac Ellington and Camden Crotts had one each.
Glenvar was home to Byrd on Monday and the Highlanders stayed undefeated after four games with a 5-1 win. Zack Williams had a three goal hat trick, Zane Smith knocked in a header and Kiptyn Jones socred the other goal for the Highlanders.
The Salem and Glenvar girls’ teams are scheduled to play at 5 pm today on the field behind Highlander Stadium. Glenvar is 3-1 after a 3-0 win over William Byrd in Vinton Monday.
Lewis is also 3-1 after losing for the first time Monday, 6-2 to Cave Spring. Nizyah Belcher and Kinsley Fischer scored for Lewis.
After today the middle school teams are off next week for spring break.
