Andrew Lewis Middle School sports were postponed Monday due to inclement weather, as the baseball, softball and both soccer teams were scheduled to play Northside.

The baseball team has been hot. The Wolverines won two games last week, an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over Hidden Valley and an 11-3 win over Cave Spring.

Against Hidden Valley, the game was tied 7-7 when Hunter Bayne walked to lead off the seventh inning. Chase Greer and Brenden Steele followed with hits to bring Bayne home for the win. Trent Judd recorded the win in relief of Camden Hart.  Greer had two hits and Tate Spitnale drove in three runs, while Caden Love drove in a pair.

A day later against Cave Spring Lewis jumped to an early 6-0 lead and never trailed. Bayne pitched, giving up just one run through five innings before Greer finished up. Chauncey Logan, Jr. drove in three runs to lead the visitors to their best scoring surge of the season as Lewis pounded out 11 hits on the day.

“This was our most complete effort so far.”  said Lewis Coach Greg Gallion.  “Our bats are getting sharper with each outing.”

The softball team lost to Cave Spring, 13-6. However, coach Sarah Beth Walton was more than pleased with the effort.

“It was an amazing game,” said Walton. “My girls fought the entire game, never gave up, and showed so much heart. I was so proud of their heart and the fight that they gave Cave Spring. Our record doesn’t show how much we have improved as a team this year.”

The loss dropped the girls to 3-6 on the season.

“It was very obvious that Cave Spring has a team with a majority of girls who play travel ball and that’s a hard competition to go against when Lewis just has one travel ball player, Lily(Lawson),” said Walton. “I truly believe that this is a major issue of why Salem softball has always struggled and not been able to have a successful season is because of our lack of travel ball players and commitment to the sport.”

The boys soccer team beat Hidden Valley, 6-0, last week and tied Cave Spring, 2-2. The girls dropped a 1-0 decision to Cave Spring.

Today, Lewis is scheduled to host Byrd in baseball and girls’ soccer with the softball and boys’ soccer teams playing in Vinton.
