The Glenvar tennis teams took on Patrick County in Three Rivers District play Monday and the Highlanders came out on top in both the boys’ and girls’ matches by 9-0 shutout scores.
The boys also had a match with Jefferson Forest at GHS last Friday that was tied at 3-3 when it was suspended by rain. All the matches were close.
“We played better than we have all year as Jefferson Forest is undefeated,” said Glenvar coach Bob Haynie. “We’re hoping to finish the match in the next couple of weeks.”
The girls got singles wins against Patrick from Riley Price, Shawna Garwood, Rebecca Magruder, Karis Gillespie, Rayah Kelley and Chelsea Garwood and swept the doubles. Last week Price, Garwood, Magruder, Gillespie, Julia Carroll and Cay Jones won singles matches in an 8-1 win over the first year James River team at Glenvar.
“It was good to notch a couple of solid wins to build momentum as we move into the second half of the season and toward the region tournament,” said Glenvar coach Shannon Hall as the Highlanders improved to 5-3.
Both teams were scheduled to play Floyd on Wednesday of this week. Results were too late for publication but the boys match at Floyd was a big one.
“The Region Championship this year goes through Floyd as they have everyone back from a very good team last year,” said Haynie.
Today the boys host Carroll County and the girls play the Cavaliers in Hillsville.
