The Rotary Club of Blacksburg recently presented Outstanding Career and Technical Education Student Awards to four area seniors.

The students honored were Courtney Lester of Auburn High School, Iris Flad of Blacksburg High School, Jakob Blanton of Christiansburg High School, and Kristina Shrader of Eastern Montgomery High School.

These awards are presented annually by the Rotary Club of Blacksburg to Montgomery County Career & Technical Education high school seniors for their excellence in their particular field of study, personal character, and volunteer activities in their community and school. The Rotary Club presents these awards in part to recognize the various occupations throughout our community, encourage high ethical standards, and to promote service to others.

The students were selected by the Rotary Club’s Vocational Service Committee and the Club’s Vice President Ferne Moschella made the presentations. Each Student Award includes a $1,000 scholarship to assist with the post-secondary educational pursuits.

We want to thank each student for contributing more to our community than just good grades. They are making a difference. And this just happens to be our theme in July for Rotary International.

Rotary International is a global network of community volunteers, an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provides humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Founded in 1905 in Chicago, today there are approximately 1.2 million Rotary club members belonging to nearly 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. The Rotary Club of Blacksburg began in 1978 and today consists of over 100 members who meet at noon on most Thursdays at the Blacksburg Country Club. To learn more about the service of the Rotary Club of Blacksburg see its Web site, www.blacksburgrotary.org.
