Touch-a-Truck: Roanoke County will host the 15th annual Touch-a-Truck from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Green Hill Park. The family-friendly event will feature dozens of vehicles for children and adults to explore, meet-and-greets with vehicle operators, a sensory-friendly hour from 9 to 10 a.m., bucket truck rides, a foam pit, car smash, inflatable dump truck, dig pit and food vendors. Ear protection will be available. Admission is free.
American Red Cross Blood Drive: John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home will host its third annual American Red Cross Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel on Aug. 11. This year’s theme is “Be One in a Minion because you are One in a Minion.” Light refreshments will be provided, and donors will receive a thank-you gift and a $20 American Red Cross gift card. Organizers hope to exceed their goal of collecting 27 units of blood. Appointments are encouraged.
Pickin’ in the Park — Salem Parks and Recreation will host the annual Pickin’ in the Park concert on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Longwood Park Amphitheater. The free event will feature bluegrass headliner Junior Sisk, along with Wound Tight and Southern Rail Express. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be on site, and outside food is permitted, but outside alcohol is prohibited. Adult beverages will be available for purchase, children’s games will be offered, and pets are not allowed.
Virginia Vintage Comics and Collectibles Show: The show will return to the Salem Civic Center for the 29th year on Saturday, Aug. 22. Show hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and free for those 12 and under.
Foreigner: The rock band Foreigner will return to the Salem Civic Center this fall as part of Verify founding year: Foreigner’s debut was 1977, not 1976.. The concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The band last performed in Salem in May 2023, playing a sold-out show featuring many of its best-known songs. Tickets may be purchased at the Salem Civic Center box office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or online through Ticketmaster.
