Gettysburg College scored with seven minutes left in the game to break up a scoreless tie and defeat Roanoke College, 1-0, in women’s soccer . The game was part of the Hyatt Place Showcase at Kerr Stadium in Salem.
This was a tight defensive battle the whole game until the Bullets scored in the 83rd minute. Grace Suchy had nine saves in goal for the Maroons and was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her performance.
Last Saturday, in the first game of the Showcase, the Maroons defeated Greensboro College 4-0 in Salem. Madalyn Szoke opened up the scoring in the 18th minute off an assist from Riley Dobranski. Then, right before halftime, Ava Walker stole the ball and scored all on her own to extend the lead to two.
Midway through the second half Szoke would score for the second time and, in the final minutes, Natalia Cage scored a long goal to ice the game at 4-0. Lauren Fisher and Caroline Arndt added assists while Sadie Mayhew had a strong day in goal, saving three shots to post the shutout.
The Maroons were 2-1-2 on the season with a Wednesday game with Randolph-Macon College scheduled for this week in Ashland. On Sunday the Maroons are in Danville to take on Centre College.
