SENIORS’ WORKSHOPS SET AT SALEM CIVIC CENTER
Senior Extravaganza, a series of free workshops on issues important to older adults, is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. Sponsored by Mental Health America, it also includes screenings for several chronic conditions common in the elderly as well as information on managing these conditions. STRING QUARTET PLAYS AT ROANOKE CHURCH
At Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in downtown Roanoke music performed on harp, flute and strings will be featured at a 6 p.m. concert on Sunday, Sept. 24. Julee Hickcox will be the flutist, Helen Rifas the harpist with Kevin Matheson on violin and his brother Bryan on viola.
PREPARING FOR DEATH TO BE PANEL THEME
The book, “When Breath Becomes Air,” by Paul Kalanithi will be the focus of a panel discussion scheduled Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in duPond Chapel of Hollins University. Free to the public, it will be moderated by Dr. Sayyid Syeed, national director of the Islamic Society of North America. Three groups are sponsoring the program focused on reflections from a dying man. They are the Office of Spiritual and Religious Life at Hollins, Voices of Faith and Blue Ridge Literacy, all of which are currently promoting understanding of the various new religious groups found in the valley.
