Bryant E. Duncan, 87, of Salem, passed away Thursday, March 7.

He was born in New Castle, the son of the late Esse and Ida Duncan and had been an area resident all of his life. A devout Christian man, he proudly served his country during the Korean War in U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed for many years as a machinist at General Electric before retiring, held a deep passion for hunting and fishing and was an avid Civil War historian. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard S. Duncan and wife Frances, a step-daughter, Tammy Salmon, and his former spouse, Shirley June Duncan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Joyce Spangler Duncan; step-son, Dewey Spangler, Jr.; sister, Kernell Lipes and husband Dell; two grandchildren, Jacob and Ben Salmon; nieces, Daphne McDaniel and husband Sonny, Cindy Johnson and husband Calvin, Barbara Lipes and Winnie Walters; nephews, Richard and Wayne Duncan; son-in-law, Michael Salmon.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son in Salem. Burial with Military Honors followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3, 2381 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, VA 24153.
