Games don’t get easier

The football contest is getting tougher by the week. Without having perennial winners like Salem and Glenvar to pick every week we have schools like Oscar Smith, Varina and others folks in Salem have no idea how good they are on the contest.

That was the case last week as all six Virginia High School League championship games were included on the contest. You might have figured Broad Run, who eliminated Salem in the state final, would have a good chance to win Class 4 if they could beat the Spartans, but that wasn’t the case. Likewise Graham, who had beaten powerful Appomattox in the semifinal, fell to King William in the championship game. Anyone who got all six high school games correct should be commended.

Salem’s Pam Cassell missed two of the high school games but only two others to win the contest that appeared in last week’s paper. She had Army over Navy, as did most of you as the boys from West Point were solid favorites but lost to the Midshipmen. Pam’s only other loss was picking Arizona over the Rams on Monday night. No one else did as well so Cassell is the winner of a $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s and a Blizzard from Dairy Queen in Salem.

For our “Quick Change” question I asked you to pick the score of the Dallas-Washington game last Sunday. The final score as 27-20 in favor of the Cowboys and three contestants tied by being off by just three points. Don Fant and Tyler Coe both guessed 27-17 and Mike Cassell had 24-20. So, for those three, we’ll have a playoff this week and whoever does the best will get the free oil change from Valvoline in Salem. Put a big star by your answer so I know it’s you.

For this week, predict the score of the Washington “FT” game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s a big one as far as a chance to make the playoffs are concerned and always a big game when these two get together. The closest will get an oil change, as well as one of the three aforementioned contestants who tied this week.

And if you think this week’s games are any easier, think again. We have eight collegiate playoff or bowl games and seven really tough pro games. Your guess on the Ferris State-Valdosta State Division II championship game could be the one that wins you a great meal at Mac & Bob’s.   –Brian Hoffman
