
The Glenvar boys were fourth and Salem was sixth at the Alleghany Invitational cross country meet at the Jackson River Sports Complex in Covington last Saturday. In the girls’ division Salem was 17th and Glenvar was 27th.
There were 40 schools and 288 runners in the boys’ division. Broadway High was the team winner and the individual champion was Kebryl Chandler of Parry McCluer High School. He finished the 5,000-meter course in 15:04.4.
Salem’s Austin Prosser finished 27th with a time of 16:39.73. Also scoring for the Spartans were John Stovall, Thomas Scharp, Isaac Snow and Camden Burns.
Glenvar trailed only meet champion Broadway (68), North Cross (126), and Christiansburg (144). The Highlanders’ top runner was freshman Jaxson Kuzmich who came in at 31st with a time of 16:46.89. Glenvar maintained a tight one-minute, 10-second gap between its first and fifth runners to secure its top-five team finish as Asher Faught was 35th, Evan Harris was 37th, Zachary Davis was 40th and Jackson Wimmer was 81st.
In the Varsity Girls race Salem placed 17th out of 28 teams. The Spartans were led by Olivia Huff in 27th place with a time of 21:12.6. The winner was Mariah Reed of Christiansburg who finished in 18:10.17. Also scoring for the Spartans were Audrey Harmon, Caroline Huff, Isabelle Henzey and Amelia O’Brien.
“The good weather along with the fast and flat course allowed many of the runners to finish their race with a season best time,” said Salem coach Tom Roth.
Genna Shanks led the Glenvar girls with a time of 25:26.73, good for 154th place among 216 in the race. Also scoring for Glenvar were Kamryn Hill, Lesly Garcia, Yatzil Villalobos and Annaleigh Hall.
In the jayvee race the Glenvar boys were second and Salem was ninth. Cash Malcom was Glenvar’s top runner and Elijay Nielson was first across the line for the Salem jayvees.
Glenvar is scheduled to go to Sugar Hollow Park for a meet hosted by John Battle High today, and Salem’s team will be back in action this Saturday at Green Hill Park.
