The Glenvar boys’ soccer team will be looking for a fourth straight Class 2 state championship this weekend when the Highlanders play in the “Final 4” in Salem.
Glenvar earned a spot in Friday’s semifinal at Roanoke College with a 2-0 win over Gate City at Highlander Stadium Tuesday in a state quarterfinal game. The Highlanders will play Bruton High in the state semifinal at 9 am at Roanoke College. Clark County and Appomattox will play the other semifinal at 11 am.
Glenvar got a first half goal from Levi King to take the lead, and that’s how it stood at the half. The Highlanders kept constant pressure on the Blue Devils goal in the second half and finally got an insurance goal with just under 23 minutes on the clock when Ryder Francisco headed in a corner kick.
With Tuesday’s win the Highlanders are now 20-0-1 on the season. They won their sixth straight Region 2C championship last week at the Smith River Complex in Axton, defeating Liberty High and Appomattox on back-to-back nights, both by shutout.
Against Liberty Glenvar took a 3-0 win. Parker Doolan, Henry Schruth and Levi King scored goals for Glenvar. Doolan also had two assists and Schruth had one as Glenvar outshot the Minutemen, 17-6. Tyler Shannon made three saves.
“It was a solid win for us against a good team,” said Glenvar coach Josh Jones.
A night later Glenvar won the region title with a 2-0 win over Appomattox. Doolan and King scored with Schruth and Tyler Curfiss assisting and Glenvar outshot the Raiders, 27-4.
“I’m extremely happy of how we played this game as we had to overcome some things that didn’t go our way,” said Jones. “The guys did a good job of continuing to play the game and closing it out.”
