The Glenvar volleyball team will open the season tonight with high hopes. The traditionally strong Highlanders will host Class 3 William Byrd at the GHS gym at approximately 7 p.m.
The Highlanders are coming off an 18-4 season with three of the losses coming to state champion Radford in very competitive matches. Review: if Highlanders lost once to Auburn and beat them once, the 18-4 record and ‘split’ are consistent, but the sentence implies only one loss to Auburn — confirm and clarify
Glenvar has a solid group of girls returning from last year’s team, including junior outside hitter Zella Hayes and both middle hitters, juniors Grace Fiedler and Olivia Collins.
Sophomore Emily Rohrback is a talented setter and right side and senior Macy McMahon is solid at right side hitter and defensive specialist. Also returning are senior rightside Rebecca Magruder and senior defensive specialist Peyton Jones. Freshman Kherington Jewell will jump right into the lineup as a setter and right side hitter.
“I’m super excited for this season and to coach these student athletes,” said coach Mark Rohrback. “They’re an amazing group.”
Rohrback, who also coaches the Roanoke College men’s volleyball team, will be assisted by his wife, Jen, and she’ll also coach the jayvee team. Kirby Hamilton is new to the staff.
“These girls are working extremely hard and having a blast,” said Rohrback. “Our goals are to play at a high level, consistent volleyball and have fun.”
