
The Glenvar boys made it a “three-peat” with their third straight Class 2 state swim championship last weekend. The Highlanders scored 271 points to outswim second place Poquoson, who had 203. Glenvar’s girls were 13th among 28 schools competing.
“The boys and girls had an outstanding meet, swimming flawlessly,” said coach Shannon Hall. “The hard work and commitment of the past three months was on full display.”
Glenvar senior Landon Cairns added two more individual titles to his career total. He won the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, setting new school records in both events. Sophomore Aspen Thompson continued his standout season by winning the 100 backstroke and finishing second in the 100 freestyle. His time in the 100 freestyle set a new school record. Senior Avery Thompson placed second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.
Glenvar’s relay teams made school history as the boys’ 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relay both won state championships for the third consecutive year. The same four swimmers, Avery Thompson, Cairns, Aspen Thompson and Brendan Miller competed on both winning relays. The Boys 400 Freestyle Relay team of Grayson Shearer, Bentley Crowe, Cooper Ermel and Darren Delby finished 10th, while the Girls 400 Freestyle Relay team of Sophie Childers, Evelyn Gard, Chloe Childers and Macy McMahon placed 8th.
Other Highlanders also competed at a high level. Ermel medaled (7th) in the 200 freestyle and placed 9th in the 100 butterfly. Shearer medaled (8th) in the 100 butterfly and placed 13th in the 200 IM.McMahon medaled in both the 100 breaststroke (4th) and 200 IM (6th) while Nikita Larin placed in the 500 freestyle (9th) and 100 breaststroke (12th). Delby placed 10th in the 100 backstroke, Miller placed in the 50 freestyle (11th) and 100 freestyle (13th) and Childers finished 9th in the 500 freestyle and 10th in the 100 breaststroke.
“With multiple individual state champions, relay dominance and new school records Glenvar once again proved why it is one of the top programs in Virginia Class 2 swimming,” said Hall.
