If the Glenvar boys can win their 60th straight game without a loss they’ll be playing for the state championship again Saturday. Glenvar made it 59 in a row Tuesday with an 8-0 win over Graham in a Class 2 state quarterfinal game at Highlander Stadium.
The two-time defending state champs advance to the Class 2 state semifinal at Roanoke College at 11 am Friday against Clarke County, a team quite familiar to the Highlanders. Glenvar beat Clarke in the 2023 state championship, their first of back-to-back championships.
Tuesday’s state quarterfinal was all Glenvar. The Highlanders led 5-0 at the half and cruised to their 19th shutout in 21 games. Aidan Hylton had a three goal hat trick against the G-Men and scoring once each were Kian Fisher, Luke Farmer, Cooper Mullins, Adam Saunders and Griffin Geddes. Glenvar outshot Graham 24-8.
The Highlanders are now 21-0-0 on the season and 58-0-1 in their last 59 games, covering three seasons. Tuesday’s win followed a 3-0 shutout of Radford last Thursday in the Region 2C final as the Highlanders won their fifth straight region crown. This is Josh Jones’ fifth year as head coach and the Highlanders have won the region every season, their first five region titles in GHS boys’ soccer history.
“”It’s very uncommon to win five consecutive region titles as it goes to show what these guys have been able to accomplish over the past several years,” said Jones.
The game was scoreless after 30 minutes but Glenvar was putting pressure on the Radford cage for most of that time. Then, with six minutes to go, Fisher was fouled in the box and Hylton converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 Glenvar lead at the half.
Just 35 seconds into the second half Farmer buried a cross from Tyler Curfiss to give Glenvar a 2-0 lead. Geddes would take another Curfiss cross with 15 minutes left in the game for an insurance goal as Grayson Shepherd and Tyler Shannon combined for shutout in goal. Glenvar outshot Radford 29-4 for the game.
If the Highlanders win Friday they’ll be back at Roanoke College Saturday morning at 10 am to play for the championship game. Tuesday’s other quarterfinals had Radford against Gate City and Fort Defiance against Bruton High from Norton, VA.
