The Glenvar girls kept the snake in the basket for a quarter Tuesday night, then they got bit.

Glenvar played host to Floyd County Tuesday, which is always a challenge for Three Rivers District teams. The Buffaloes have dominated the district for years and their pressing style can be intimidating to opponents. So, coach Brian Crockett tried something a little different Tuesday night.

“We started out in a ‘four corners’ kind of offense,” he said. “We spread them out, and for awhile it worked.”

Glenvar trailed just 15-13 after the first quarter and the Buffaloes weren’t amused. They came out in the second quarter and put 30 more on the board for a convincing lead on their way to a 69-37 win.

“They started trapping us in the second quarter and we started throwing the ball away,” said Crockett. “There was really nothing I could do except sit and watch.”

Kiera Omberg and Olivia Harris led Glenvar with 13 points each as the Highlanders fell to 8-10 on the season. Floyd improved to 12-6 with the win.

The girls also played Alleghany a home-and-home in the past week. Last Friday at Alleghany the Highlanders pulled out a 45-44 win as Omberg hit a three pointer with eight seconds left for the winning bucket. Omberg finished with 27 points and Crockett credited Terrica Moorman and Taylor Dishon for strong efforts on the defensive end.

On Monday the Mountaineers returned the trip and got a measure of revenge, defeating the Highlanders 51-44 at GHS. Omberg had 18 while Harris and Dishon had 10 points each.

Glenvar is back home tonight to host Giles, and Saturday they’ll take on Salem at 11:45 am in the Adam Ward Classic at Salem High School.
