The Glenvar soccer teams will begin defense of their 2024 state championships this Friday with a girls-boys doubleheader at Highlander Stadium. The girls will play at 6 pm with the boys at approximately 7:45 pm against opponents that were yet to be determined at press time.
The Glenvar girls enter the post-season at 14-2 and they’ve won their last 13 in a row. Glenvar was undefeated in Three Rivers District play to claim the district championship. The girls finished the regular season with a 7-1 win over James River on Senior Night at Highlander Stadium last week. Cam Stevens had two goals, Davin Tate had a goal and two assists and Annie George, Sawyer Wilson, Adalee Harvey and Avery Steger had one goal each.
The boys wrapped up their regular season at James River and polished off their district championship with an overall record of 17-0. The two-time defending state champion Highlanders have not lost in their last 55 games dating back to the spring of 2023. This season Glenvar has outscored the opposition 102-2, not counting a 1-0 win over Floyd when the Buffaloes forfeited the game last Friday.
Last week in Buchanan the Highlanders scored five goals in the first 15 minutes of the game to get out to an early lead over the Knights. Goal scorers were Kian Fisher and Evan Harris with two each and a goal apiece by Aidan Hylton, Luke Farmer, Kees Van Gerven, Griffin Geddes and Levi King. Wesley Feliciano (2), Farmer, Alan Vu, Seth Nichols, King, Grayson Shepherd, Tyler Curfiss, and Jackson Jones picked up assists as Glenvar outshot their hosts 33-3.
“We started the game much better than the previous two games,” said coach Josh Jones. “We have to bring that fire each and every time we take the field as we head into the postseason. It was a tremendous regular season but now it’s time to refocus and look to postseason play.”
