The Glenvar tennis teams opened their seasons last Thursday with two close matches against William Byrd. The boys won, 5-4, over the Terriers in Vinton while the girls lost, also 5-4, at home.

The boys got a win for new coach Jeff Hill in his first match coaching the team. Glenvar secured the win with individual singles wins from Christian Hill, Chaitanya Gohil, Aryan Patel and Quincy Huggins, and a doubles win from Gohil and Brady Smith.

The girls fell behind Byrd 4-1 but rallied to make it 4-4 before falling at number three doubles. Glenvar trailed 4-2 after the singles with wins from Riley Price at number one and Priya Patel at five. In doubles, the number one team of Shawna Garwood and Rebecca Magruder won, as did the second team of Price and Karis Gillespie.

“We played well considering the weather kept us off the courts for several practices,” said Glenvar girls’ coach Shannon Hall.

Both teams are off this week for spring break.
