The Glenvar High boys’ basketball team is entered in the annual Chance Harman Classic, which is hosted by Floyd County High School. The Highlanders are scheduled to play Graham this Friday, January 2nd, at 7 pm.
Glenvar was competing in the Northside Invitational Tournament as the paper went to press this week. The championship game was set for Tuesday but results were too late for publication due to early holiday deadlines.
This year’s eight team tournament included Alleghany, George Wythe, Rustburg, North Cross, Blacksburg, Liberty Christian, Glenvar and the host Vikings. Northside is traditionally favored in this tournament but not this year, according to Viking coach Billy Pope.
“This will be the first time in a few years we aren’t favored,” said Pope prior to the start of the three day tournament. “I’d have to say North Cross was the favorite this year. They’re loaded.”
Glenvar went into the tournament at 3-1 with wins over two larger schools the week prior to Christmas. They won at Blacksburg, 81-63, as Jax Bolling had 23 points, Ryder Francisco had 16 and Parker Doolan had 13.
“Solid road win, need to continue to make progress on the defensive side of ball,” said Glenvar coach Hank Luton. “Proud of our group effort!”
On December 19 at home the Highlanders beat William Byrd, 66-57. Bolling had 30 and Francisco and Doolan had 16 each.
“We were able to force turnovers early against an experienced, good Byrd team,” said Luton.
After Friday’s game at Floyd the Highlanders will be back in action Monday, January 5, to host Hidden Valley.
