The Glenvar softball team got a big win Tuesday as the Highlanders hosted arch-rival Floyd County and took a 4-2 win.
The victory avenged a 10-0 loss to the Buffaloes in their previous meeting in Floyd. In the rematch, Glenvar was determined to start off strong and limit the number of runs for Floyd in a battle of two standout freshmen pitchers, Olivia Yates from Floyd and McKenna Shearer from Glenvar.
Glenvar got on the board first when Lydia Taylor singled, followed by a walk by Maddie Martinez and a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Raines, leaving batters at second and third with only one out. Taylor was able to score on a wild pitch, putting Glenvar up 1-0 at the end of the second inning.
In the third inning, McKenzie Pulliam hit a single, followed by Olivia Adams. With two runners on base and two outs Martinez singled and scored Pulliam. Raines also singled, scoring both Adams and Martinez. At the end of the third Glenvar was leading 4-0. In the top of the fourth, Floyd got three hits, scoring two runs. Both teams were held scoreless through the rest of the game, ending with Glenvar winning 4-2.
Both pitchers allowed just five hits. McKenna Shearer also had six strikeouts and walked one batter. Floyd came into the game undefeated in district play, with a record of 13-3 and 9-0 in the district. Glenvar improved to 10-8 with the win.
“This was a huge win for the Glenvar softball program,” said Glenvar coach Lonnie Raines.
On Monday at Glenvar the Highlanders took a 15-5 win over Radford in five innings. Glenvar was led in hitting by McKenzie Pulliam who had two hits and two RBIs, Taylor who had two hits and three RBIs, and McKenna Jarvis who had two hits and an RBI.
Last Friday the Highlanders beat Alleghany, 12-1. The Highlanders will take a three game winning streak into a home game with Giles this Friday.
Glenvar freshman infielder and pitcher Courtney Raines was scheduled to have a knee operation on Wednesday. Depending on the findings she could be out from anywhere from three weeks to 10 months.
