The Salem High softball team is 7-10 after dropping a game at Blacksburg on Monday. The Bruins had three home runs while Salem left eight on base.

Taylor McCaleb had Salem’s only run batted in on a sacrifice fly. Alyssa Akers and Morgan Tennant had two hits each for the Spartans.

The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Salemites. Last Friday at Hidden Valley the Spartans took a 6-2 win over the host Titans. Reagan Owens had a big game on the mound, fanning eight while walking none and allowing just two unearned runs.

At the plate, Maggie King, Lauren Moran, Taylor Bolen and Tennant all had two hits while Liz Warren, Akers, Moran, King and Bolen all drove in runs.

On Monday the Spartans were at Pulaski, where they avenged a 2-1 loss from the week prior by beating the Cougars on their own turf, 4-1. The visitors scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first. Kendra Bolen drove in two runs and Warren drove in the other. King drove in McCaleb in the fourth for an insurance run as Owens cruised on the mound to pick up the win. Reagan struck out nine and once again walked none.

“The girls are playing solid defense and are getting timely hits we weren’t getting earlier in the season,” said Salem coach John Counts. “The hard work they put into practice is showing in their performances on the field.”

The Spartans are back in action tonight at Cave Spring.
