
The middle school track season got underway with the first meets last week and Glenvar and Andrew Lewis were both in action.
At Glenvar the Highland girls’ track team kicked off their outdoor season in spectacular fashion with wins over Cave Spring and Southwest Virginia Academy. The Glenvar boys and girls efforts combined for seven school records along the way.
Ava Poindexter had an incredible night with six first-place finishes; with record breaking leaps in the long jumps (15’10), triple jump (33’9″), and high jump (4-8), along with victories in the 100, 100 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash. Mylea Williams led the way with first-place finishes and record-breaking throws in the shot put (30″1′) and discus (72″0), shattering the GMS shot put record by three feet.
On the boys’ side, multi-sport standout Zack Smith returned from the soccer field to break the school shot put record with a throw of 39’3”. Kerrick Faught started the season strong with wins in the long jump, triple jump, and 300 hurdles, while Bryson Kuzmich placed first in the 400 with an impressive personal best. Jumpers Jayden Huggins and Kindrex Thompson combined for top-three finishes in all three jumping events.
The Lewis team defeated William Byrd and Read Mountain Middle Schools at William Byrd’s Patterson Stadium. The Lewis girls were led by top scorer Liv Lam who won the 300 meter Hurdles. Brynn Clewis was the winner in the 400 meter dash, while Nyla Otey won the 100 meter hurdles. Carma Mitchen won the long jump and Madelyn Eversole took the 1600 meter run. The 400 meter relay team of Clewis, Mitchen, Olivia Owens, and Marley Harmon also took first place.
The Wolverine boys were led by top scorer Zyere Richardson, who won both hurdle races. Carter Webb won the 100 meter dash and the long jump, Felix Ruch was the winner of the 1600 meter run and the 400 meter dash was won by Amir Franklin.
Grant Martin took first in the shot put. The 400 meter relay team of Webb, Liam Park, Joshua Elliot and Jayden White also took a first for Lewis.
