Joan Mary Goodmiller was born on October 1, 1944 in Twinsburg, Ohio. She passed away on February 26, 2017.

She is survived by her husband, Ken Goodmiller; her daughters, Melinda Ali and Natasha Goodmiller; her son, Aaron Goodmiller and his wife, Sasha; and her son, Jimmy Goodmiller. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jasmine Ali, Erica Ali, Desir’e Allen, Lamar Gaskins, Devin, Brianna and Ethan Wilson, and Isabella and Seth Goodmiller. She also leaves three sisters, Paulette Welsh, Sandra Pierce and Jackie Tedeschi.

Before moving to Fincastle in 1995, Joan was a secretary in Northern Virginia to two vice-principals at Jefferson Middle School, Arlington County. She was also President of “Self-Help for the Hard of Hearing (SHHH) in Arlington. After moving to Fincastle , she began a local chapter of SHHH. She was president of that chapter for many years and also was the Virginia state SHHH coordinator until the onset of Alzheimer’s.

She was a member of the Church of Christ since 1967 in Arlington and Covington and was actively involved in outreach, evangelism, teaching and other church activities. Joan loved kids and animals. She made arrangements through SW Virginia state and local Social Services to bring children into her and Ken’s home, both short- and long-term. She was always open to adopting dogs and bringing home stray dogs and cats. She enjoyed retirement by working in her gardens, moving and taking care of her husband and their property.

Maybe her favorite thing in the whole world was “Chocolate”.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon, Wednesday, March 1 at Church of Christ, with Danny Lawhorn officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Aaron Goodmiller, Devin Wilson, Lamar Gaskins, and those selected from friends and family attending the service.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the Church of Christ.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of donations to Hearing Loss Association of America, HLAA, 7910 Woodmont Suite 1200, Bethesda, Md. 20814 and the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, 3152 Little Road, Suite 146, Trinity, Fla. 34655.
