Salem was the “City of Champions” once again this week as NCAA Division III champs were crowned in softball and women’s lacrosse. Above left, Brooke Greaver(#32) of Virginia’s Christopher Newport University is all smiles as she rounds first base after opening the bottom of the ninth inning with an extra inning “walk off” home run in the NCAA Division III softball tournament Sunday at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem. Above right, Captain teammates await Greaver at the plate in the 4-3 win over Texas Lutheran. The Captains went on to finish undefeated in the tournament, defeating Griner University of Indiana 3-0 on Tuesday to win the NCAA championship with a season record of 46-1. Right, Middlebury College lacrosse players pose for a team photo after winning the NCAA Division III championship in Salem Sunday afternoon. Middlebury broke open a tight contest to score six unanswered goals to close out the game and take a 13-5 win in the championship game at Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College.
