The Glenvar Highlanders just keep rolling along. Glenvar improved to 8-0 in football last week with a 35-0 shutout win over Radford at Highlander Stadium. The Bobcats were expected to be one of their toughest tests of the regular season.
“I’m proud of our kids, it was a great team effort,” said Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford. “Radford is a good rivalry and it’s always a tough matchup. Our kids did what they had to do and they played hard together.”
Glenvar led 28-0 at the half. Brody Dawyot’s three yard run got the Highlanders on the board, and on the ensuing series Rawlin Hanks picked off a pass and raced 43 yards for a score. Cooper Mullins had a rare miss on the extra point but Glenvar led 13-0.
Glenvar’s defense forced a punt on the next series and Ranger Swanson took it to the house only to have the score nullified by a penalty on the return. That only delayed the inevitable. A minute and two seconds into the second quarter Dawyot scored on a six yard run and a two point conversion made it 21-0. The final score of the half came on a 10 yard pass from Brody to Mullins and it was 28-0 at intermission.
It didn’t long to get the clock running continuously in the second half. Halfway through the quarter, on a fourth down play, Dawyot found brother Tre Dawyot open in the corner of the end zone and Mullins’ kick made it 35-0. All that was left was to get the shutout and the Glenvar defense took care of that. The Bobcats never threatened in the second half and Glenvar’s Nick Wilson blocked a field goal attempt in the first half to keep the sheet clean.
Brody Dawyot was 15 for 19 passing for 124 yards and he also rushed 17 times for 99 yards. Dawyot accounted for four touchdowns and is moving in on the state record for career touchdowns.
Swanson had 27 runs for 94 yards. Mullins had seven catches for 43 yards, Jace Forster and Cale Vaughan had three catches each and Tre Dawyot had two.
On defense Vaughan and Hanks had 10 tackles each and they both had an interception, with Rawlin’s going for six points. Wilson, Brody Dawyot and Dalton Shoemaker lived in the Bobcats’ backfield, combining for three sacks and seven tackles for losses.
With the win the Highlanders solidified their place atop the Region 2C rankings. They now have a 24.5 power points rating with Gretna second at 23.43 and a 6-1 record. Floyd County is also 6-1 and ranked third at 21.86 after suffering their first loss last Friday, a 52-49 shootout against Carroll County. Glenvar will play at Floyd in the final game of the season on November 1.
The Highlanders have their final home game of the regular season this week against Patrick County. The Cougars are 3-5 overall and 0-4 against Three Rivers District teams, losing to Martinsville, Carroll, Floyd and Radford.
“They run the ball well,” said Clifford. “They’ll do what Carroll did, try to keep the ball and limit our touches. It should be a physical game.”
The Glenvar jayvees suffered their first loss last week, falling to Radford on the road, 22-7. The jayvees are at Patrick tonight.
