The Glenvar volleyball team will be home tonight to take on Alleghany in a Three Rivers District match. The Mountaineers are a Group 3A school and the newest member of the district.

Glenvar comes in at 8-9 after an up-and-down week. Last Thursday at Carroll County they lost in three sets, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20. Hannah Green had eight kills and Katherine Ward had 19 assists.

The Highlanders have three matches this week, and they opened the stretch with a hard-fought win over Radford at home on Monday night. After losing the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-11, the Highlanders battled back to win the next three, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-10.

This was Maggie Ruble’s night. She was all over the floor as she played her best match of the season.

“This is what I was waiting for,” said Glenvar coach Basil Conner. “Maggie got the fire back Monday night. She’s the kind who you never know where she’s looking, and I always hated to play against players like that. She was all over the court.”

On Tuesday Glenvar hosted James River and the Knights had too much firepower for the Highlanders. It was River’s 10th win in a row as the Knights improved to 15-3 with a four set win.

“It was Senior Night and you can almost count on losing the first set on that night,” said Conner. “But we won the first set! Then it was all downhill from there.”

Three seniors were honored prior to the match, Allison Clark, Abby Fletcher and Aislinn Kerr. Then Glenvar won the first set, 25-22, but River evened the score with a 25-21 win in the second set. The Knights then turned it on, winning 25-17 and 25-14.

“We had some opportunities, but James River has a very good team,” said Conner.

After tonight’s home match with Alleghany the Highlanders will go on the road for two district matches next week. They’ll play at Floyd County on Tuesday and at Giles a week from tonight.
