The Glenvar boys are home tonight to take on Martinsville in another tough Three Rivers District matchup. The Bulldogs come into the week at 9-3 and thus far they’re the only team to beat Floyd County, another tough district team.
On Tuesday the Highlanders fell to 5-7 with a loss at Radford, yet another strong district team. Glenvar had a 13 point lead in the third quarter but the Bobcats rallied for a 69-59 win.
“Couldn’t close it out,” said Glenvar coach Hank Luton. “It’s on me to coach better late in games. That’s two road district games we could have gotten that we led for most of game and didn’t finish.”
Ryder Francisco led Glenvar with 22 points. Parker Doolan haad 15 and Gray Hutchison was in double figures with 10.
Last Friday at home the Highlanders pulled away from James River for a 64-46 win. The game was close early but the Highlanders went on a run in the second quarter and never gave up the lead.
“We played well in spurts and made enough shots to keep them at bay,” said Luton. “I’m proud of our defensive effort against their methodical style. It was a good district win against a well-coached James River team. Ethan Humphries is one of the top coaches in our area, they are always prepared.”
Glenvar had three players in double figures, led by Francisco with 19. Landen Rakes had 14 points and Doolan had a bakers’ dozen. Luton also had praise for Evan Harris.
“Evan made some great decisions in the second half, finding some driving lanes and kicking to shooters, namely Ryder Francisco who hit some big shots,” he said.
Glenvar has the second game of a back-to-back at Patrick County on Friday night. Then they won’t play again until Wednesday, January 21, at William Byrd.
