Cody Alexander and Logan Lucas combined for a two-hit shutout as Glenvar beat Three Rivers District rival James River in baseball Tuesday. The Highlanders took a 7-0 win at GHS.

Alexander went the first four and a third innings before coach Ben Amos pulled him in favor of Lucas. Cody allowed one hit and struck out four and Lucas allowed one hit with two strikeouts.

“Our pitching has been phenomenal,” said Amos. “Our pitching and defense keeps us in every game.”

Glenvar led 4-0 after five innings and broke it wide open with three in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Butler had two hits for Glenvar and Ryan Lee had two runs batted in.

Last Friday Butler was a one-man wrecking crew in an 8-2 win over Carroll County in Hillsville. The tall freshman pitched Glenvar to the win, using 57 pitches to get through five innings with just two hits allowed and four strikeouts. At the plate he slammed his first varsity home run, a three run shot, and also had two singles. Tripp Adams also had a home run for Glenvar.

Now 9-4-1, the Highlanders have their work cut out for them this week. They were scheduled to host 11-3 Class 3 Staunton River on Wednesday, and on Friday Alleghany is here for a big game. The Mountaineers beat Glenvar the first time around and currently lead the Three Rivers District standings. Alexander will pitch that game for the Highlanders.

“If we can beat them we can tie them for first place,” said Amos. “This is a big week for us.”
