The Glenvar High baseball team has a big game tonight when the Highlanders host Carroll County on Larry Wood Field. Game time is 5 pm for the Three Rivers District game.

Glenvar comes in at 10-5 overall and battling for position in the district and Region 2C. The Highlanders had a big game with Floyd County last Friday follow ing the ceremony to name the field after former coach Larry Wood. The Buffaloes won the game that followed, 4-0, but it was a good one as a pitchers’ battle between Glenvar’s Cale Vaughan and Floyd ace Gavin Swortzel ensued.

“Swortzel’s a really good pitcher,” said Glenvar coach Jeremy Cromer. “We have them again for our last game of the season and it could come down to who gets the number one seed in the region.”

Swortzel held Glenvar without a hit through three innings and the Buffaloes scored one in the first, two in the second and three in the third to take a 4-0 lead. However, Vaughan shut them down for the next three innings, including the sixth when he struck out the side on 10 pitches.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders battled back with two in the bottom of the fourth. They scored one more in the seventh but couldn’t catch Floyd as the Buffaloes escaped with a hard earned win in front of a big crowd. John Deel had two hits and Evan Johnson drove in two for the Highlanders.

On Monday Glenvar had a non-district game at Hidden Valley and lost 5-4. Jake Franklin drove one to the fence in the sixth with the bases loaded but the Titans’ centerfielder made a spec tacular catch and the Highlanders fell one run short. Cam Feazell pitched a good game but took the loss while Johnson had three hits and Vaughan and Easton Quesenberry had two each.

On Tuesday Glenvar was scheduled to play Martinsville but the Bulldogs no longer have a team and had to for feit. The Highlanders picked up Eastern Montgomery and took a 13-1win in Elliston behind left Gray Hutchison, who is usually Glenvar’s closer. Gray pitched a two-hitter and fanned 10 with no walks for the win. He also had three hits and drove in four runs.

“The kids were joking that we picked up two wins in one day,” said Cromer.
