The Glenvar volleyball team will open the 2025 season with a tripleheader at Glenvar High School Monday. The Highlanders will host Craig County for middle school, jayvee and varsity games beginning with a 4:30 pm middle school game.

After winning the state Class 2 championship in 2022 and ’23 the Highlanders had a full reload last year and finished 7-13. However, coach Mark Rohrback was pleased with the progress the team made and, with a district championship jayvee team adding to this year’s squad, he’s optimistic about a return to glory.

“We had a great year with a young squad,” said Rohrback. “I was pleased with our progress and the amount of experience we gained despite having to battle through some tough injury issues.”

Key returning players for the Highlanders include seniors Sophia Hammersley and Addi Cockram, juniors Macy McMahon, Sawyer Wilson and Rebecca Magruder and sophomores Grace Fiedler and Zella Hayes. New members of the varsity squad junior defensive specialist Peyton Jones, sophomores Olivia Collins and Aubrey Board and freshman setter and opposite hitter Emily Rohrback.

“I expect all of them to play and contribute to the team’s success,” said coach Rohrback. “We’ll build on the confidence and level of play attained by last year’s young squad and if we make the same amount of progress, we are going to have a fun, successful season.”

Rohrback will be assisted by his wife, Jen, a former Highlander player.

“Jen and I are thankful to have 23 amazing kids in the program this year, including four eighth graders on the jayvee squad,” he said. “We’re excited about this season and the future of the program.”

After Monday’s home match with Craig County the Highlanders will travel to Northside High School on Tuesday, August 26.
