The Glenvar volleyball team will finish one trip through the Three Rivers District this week, and so far it’s been a good ride.

The Highlanders were 5-0 before heading to Alleghany Wednesday night to meet their final district opponent. Glenvar won at Radford last Wednesday and in home matches against Floyd last Thursday and Giles on Monday to remain undefeated in their 12 game regular season schedule, with home-and-home matches against each of the six Three Rivers opponents.

“We’re improving every time we play, and that’s the idea,” said Glenvar coach Mark Rohrback. “The Three Rivers is a very strong district for volleyball and so far I’ve been pleased with our results. The girls are working hard and having fun.”

Last Wednesday at Radford the Highlanders beat a solid group of Bobcats in a very tight match. Glenvar won the first two sets, both by a 26-24 score, then lost the third set 31-29. Glenvar regrouped in the fourth to put it away, 25-17.

Sophomore Hannah Hylton filled up the boxscore at Radford with 21 kills and 21 digs. She served 25 times with five aces and no errors, and on 49 kill attempts she didn’t hit a single one out of bounds or into the net.

“Can you imagine how hard that is to do, to play a whole match with no errors?” asked Rohrback.

Sydney Loder had 10 kills against Radford while Caroline Craig had 59 assists.

Just a night later the Highlanders were back home to host Floyd and they won this one in three, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21. Rhyan Harris had six blocks to go with three kills and Kendall Birdlebough had six digs and three aces.

That set up a big match with Giles on Monday at GHS. Both teams came in undefeated.

“They were 4-0 and their scores were similar to ours against the teams they beat,” said Rohrback. “I expected a tough match.”

And it was, but the Highlanders came out on top in three, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-20. Cara Butler was all over the floor with 16 digs and she also had six aces.

“Her serving was the difference in the match,” said Rohrback.

Claire Griffith had 14 kills, 15 digs and four blocks against Giles while Craig dished out 34 assists.

“It was our best match of the season,” said Rohrback.
