The Glenvar volleyball team is 16-3 overall and 6-1 in the Three Rivers District after a win over Radford at home Tuesday night. The Highlanders will try to keep it going tonight when they host Patrick County in a Three Rivers match.
Glenvar beat the Bobcats in four sets. After losing the first set, 25-23, they rallied to win the next three by scores of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-23.
“It was a good match,” said Glenvar coach Mark Rohrback. “Radford played well.”
Zella Hayes had a big night for the Highlanders with 21 kills, and Emily Rohrback filled up the box score with 24 assists, six kills, seven aces and 15 digs. Olivia Collins had nine kills and Grace Fiedler had her best serving night of the season with eight aces.
Last Thursday in Buchanan, the Glenvar girls took on arch-rival James River and swept the regular season series with the Knights. This one went four sets, as Glenvar won the first two, 25-16 and 25-20. River won the third set, 25-14, but the Highlanders won a close fourth set to put it away, 25-23.
“Good match,” said Rohrback. “James River is tough. We played well at times but we’re still working on consistency in a number of facets of the game.”
Hayes led the Highlanders with 15 kills and nine digs. Rebecca Magruder put down eight kills, Emily Rohrback had 16 assists and 17 digs and Macy McMahon had 19 digs and a pair of aces on the serving line.
Glenvar has a big non-district match next Monday in Blacksburg. The Class 4 Bruins beat the Highlanders in five sets in their first meeting.
