The Glenvar High 4×400 boys’ relay team won a state championship Saturday in the rain as East Rockingham High School played host to the Class 2 state championship meet.

The 4×400, pseudo “mile relay,” is the last event of the meet and there was a question over wheather the weather would allow it to be held. The rain continued, but the lightning held off, the race was on and Glenvar’s team of Kilian McCroskey, Bradey Loder, Dustin Wade and Jack Leonard blazed to the win. The foursome won in a time of 3:32, close to 10 seconds better than the second place team.

“That was a tough run because right before the gun went off, rain began to pour down pretty hard,” said Glenvar coach Neil Swanson. “We had a very wet state meet and kudos for all those kids who stuck through it all to the end.”

Kilian McCroskey also took third in the 400 and Leonard was third in the 300 hurdles. Wade took 10th in state for the 800 as Glenvar finished 11th as a team. Maggie Walker won the state championship.

Wilson Memorial won the girls’ state championship and the Highlanders took 25th. Rachel Millirons was seventh in the 1,600 and the girls 4×800 team was also seventh. That team consisted of Kyra King, Becky Linkous, Abby Fletcher, and Millirons.

“I’m very proud of all those kids who participated,” said Swanson.
