The Glenvar boys’ soccer team got a test from Cave Spring on Monday but the Highlanders passed with flying colors to remain undefeated. After a scoreless first half the Highlanders put two into the net after intermission for a 2-0 shutout win over the Class 3 Knights.

With the win, along with a 6-1 win at Alleghany Tuesday, the Highlanders improved to 15-0 on the season and have clinched their fifth straight Three Rivers District championship under coach Josh Jones, who is in his fifth year as head coach.

Jones changed up a few things at the half Monday as Glenvar pulled out the win over Cave Spring.

“We made a few adjustments at the half,” said Jones. “One of them was making a more conscious effort to attack the wide spots of the field as the middle was very bunched up at times.”

Glenvar finally got the lead on a penalty kick by Aidan Hylton. Then Kian Fisher scored an insurance goal late with an assist from Kees Van Gerven.

The Highlanders outshot Cave Spring, 19-8, which was closer than usual. Grayson Shepherd made four saves to earn the shutout and Jake Williams, Tyler Curfiss, Gavin Miller, Alan Vu and Alex Rottkamp held down the back line.

“It was a good challenge for us to overcome some things that didn’t go our way in a physical game,” said Jones. “It really pushed us physically and mentally. It was also great to recognize our 13 seniors before the game. These guys have been a huge part of our program over the past several years as they have accomplished an amazing 76-2-2 career record.”

On Tuesday at Alleghany Fisher scored three goals, Wesley Feliciano had two and Ryder Francisco had one in the win over the Cougars. Alleghany scored a late goal on a penalty kick, just the second goal give has given up all season.

The Highlanders were scheduled to play James River in Buchanan on Wednesday of this week, ending the regular season with a trip to Floyd Friday. Region 2C quarterfinals are scheduled to begin May 30th and Glenvar will be home as they start their quest for a third straight Class 2 state championship.
