The Roanoke College field hockey team defeated Sewanee, 4-1, in its home-opener Sunday afternoon in Salem.
Roanoke jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Alexis Lester found the back of the cage off a rebound of a Fiona Dougan shot 16 minutes into the contest. In the second half, Rebecca Schmidt doubled the Maroons lead with an unassisted goal just under five minutes into the period.
Sewanee closed the gap off a penalty stroke conversion by Katie Wilson to make it a 2-1 game with 26 minutes left. Dougan then scored off a push pass from Leonore Keunen to give RC a 3-1 advantage with a little over 20 minutes left in the game. Emilee Wooten tacked on another goal assisted from Schmidt to close out the scoring in the 4-1 win.
The Maroons owned a 31-6 advantage in shots and a 12-5 edge in corners. Emma Clark made four saves on the day for RC.
The Maroons have two more home games this week. Wilson College comes in Wednesday night and McDaniel is here for a noon game Saturday.
