James River’s Josey Lackey punched one over the infield in right to score Hollie Hill for a walkoff win over Glenvar in Buchanan Tuesday. The Knights swept the season series with the win but the two Conference 38 rivals could be on a collision course for the post-season.

River took an early lead with three unearned runs in the first inning, but Glenvar battled back. Emily Teaford’s third inning homer put Glenvar on the board, and the Highlanders scored a run when River pitcher Olivia Simmons was called for an “illegal pitch” with a runner on third in the fifth.

Meanwhile, Teaford was keeping the Highlanders in the game. She relieved Abby Schoonover on the mound in the second inning and kept a solid Knights batting order from inflicting any more damage through the sixth inning.

Glenvar tied the game in the top of the seventh. Cayla Alexander singled and went all the way to third on Schoonover’s sacrifice bunt. Cayla then scored on a ground out to second by Mackenzie Pulliam to tie the game, only to have James River rally in the bottom of the inning for the victory.

“Those three runs in the first inning hurt us,” said Glenvar coach Rick Street. “It was very windy and it took us a while to adjust. It played havoc with some fly balls.”

The loss dropped Glenvar to 8-5 while River improved to 13-1. The Highlanders won back-to-back home games last week against Grayson County and Radford.

Glenvar beat Grayson County last Thursday at home despite getting only one hit, a home run by Alexander. Schoonover pitched a shutout, scattering six hits and not allowing a single walk while the Highlanders played errorless ball behind her.

On Friday the Highlanders beat Radford, 12-4. Schoonover got the win, pitching the first four innings. Teaford pitched the final three to put it away. Kaley Williams had three hits and Olivia Adams, Pulliam and Katherine Ward had two each.

The Highlanders will have another tough this Friday when they host Auburn. The Eagles were undefeated until they lost to James River last week, 2-0.
