The Salem High girls scored five unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Patrick Henry, 7-2, in a girls’ lacrosse game at Merrill Gainer Stadium in Roanoke last week.

The game was knotted at 2-2 at the half but Salem controlled the play after intermission. Chloe Butt finished with four goals and an assist to lead the Spartans while Zoe Blair scored twice and Addi Blanchard had the other goal. Morgan Tew had an assist, Brynn Bowen had eight saves in the crease and Bailey Stratton had four draw controls and four ground balls.

“We started off timid on our offense, but defense held the score to only 2-2 at halftime,” said coach Maggi Pace. “Post halftime we seemed to really get our wits about us and did not let PH score again.  It was fun to watch our offense really see each other and work the ball for opportunities.”

The Spartans were scheduled to play Cave Spring on Wednesday. Next week they’re at E.C. Glass on Monday, home to Blacksburg on Wednesday and at Rockbridge a week from tonight.

“That’s going to be a tough week because Blacksburg is looking very strong this year, as is Rockbridge, and the games are back to back days,” said Pace.
