The Salem High lacrosse teams celebrated “Senior Night” Monday with a sweep of Cave Spring. The boys opened with an 18-5 win over the Knights and the girls finished off a big night with a 15-4 win in the nightcap.
Senior Will Poldiak had four goals and two assists for Salem and Zach Mason had four and one. Peyton Woodward had a good night in the goal for the Spartans.
For the girls, senior Arie Newman had three goals and an assist and Lilly Blair had three goals and two assists. Libby Bowman also had three goals, senior Abbey Greer had two and one and Madi Caldwell had a goal and four assists. Maddie Bowman had 10 saves and kept her season “goals against” average under five.
“We had a great time celebrating our seniors and finishing out the season with a win,” said Salem coach Maggi Pace.
Now the playoffs begin. Salem’s boys will host William Fleming at home on Friday in what should be a walk-over win. The Spartans are 10-4 after finishing the season with a 17-5 win at Franklin County last week and Monday’s win over the Knights.
“We had two good team wins that lead us into the playoffs,” said coach Daniel Dyer. “We were able to do some good things on offense and defense that allowed ust to get the younger guys in the games. I look forward to seeing how our guys respond with playoffs starting up.”
Salem’s girls are 11-3 and will host Cave Spring again on Friday to start the playoffs. The winner of that game plays the winner of Hidden Valley and William Fleming on Monday at 6 pm at Hidden Valley.
