The Salem High lacrosse teams took on traditionally strong North Cross in lacrosse Tuesday and the Spartan boys and girls came away with a sweep. The boys won at Spartan Field, 11-3, and the girls pulled out a 5-4 win at North Cross.
The boys game was played for the 2nd annual Tommy Girani Memorial Cup. The late Girani was a close friend of Salem High coach George Revercomb and had ties to both the Salem and North Cross lax teams.
“Fun game tonight,” said Revercomb. “Tommy’s dad John, mother Lisa, and sister Alaina were there and handed out the trophy after the game.”
Salem’s defense was a key factor in the win. North Cross came in averaging over 15 goals a game but the Spartans held them to just one in the first half and three in the game. North Cross has two Division I commits and two other players going to strong D-III schools.
“Defense played awesome,” said Revercomb. “Holding them to three was huge, and two of their goals were man up. Ronnie Frith, Carson Garland, Andrew Nevergold, Winston Wolfe and Michael Crawley anchored the D poles and Richar Hof played incredible in goal. He was my MVP of the game.”
Hof had 13 saves for the Spartans. Holden Custer led the team with four goals while Parker Dallas had two goals and three assists. Wade Marble, Tucker Preas and Oliver Farber also scored for Salem.
With the win the Spartans are 2-0 on the season against two quality teams, Western Albemarle and North Cross. Their next stop is next Wednesday, April 8, against Patrick Henry in Roanoke.
The girls are now 1-1 after their win over North Cross. Salem’s girls return to the field next Monday, April 6, for a game at William Byrd in Vinton.
