The Andrew Lewis girls’ basketball team remained undefeated, the boys had a dramatic win and the wrestlers pulled out an exciting match in middle school sports action prior to Thanksgiving.

The basketball teams played back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday of last week and the girls came up big again, defeating William Byrd and Addison. The two wins lifted the Wolverines to 6-0.

The girls took a 42-23 win against Byrd in Vinton. Kennedy Scales had 13 points, Summer Bayne had 12 and Rachel Lafrancois had nine. Abbie Baker had eight rebounds and three blocks to go along with six points.

“This game was a tale of two halves for us,” said coach Nat Franklin. “ I felt Byrd played really smart and tougher than us in the first half.  In the second half, I thought the girls did a great job of refocusing, playing together and competing to get the win. ”

On Tuesday the girls beat Addison at Lewis, 49-23, behind 15 points by Scales. Bayne had eight and Baker had seven boards.

“From the beginning to end, the girls played hard, smart and with a lot of poise,” said Franklin. “I was extremely pleased with all of the girls efforts on both offense and defense. ”

The Lewis boys split their two games to go 3-3 on the season. On Monday in Salem Nick Owen hit a runner in the paint as the clock expired to give the Wolverines a 35-33 win over Byrd. Owen led the team with seven points and Chauncey “Deuce” Logan had six.

“I was impressed with the way we battled for the entire game,” said coach Brandon Keith. “Our effort was symbolic of the caliber of young men that we have in our program.”

A night later Lewis lost to a talented Addison team, 56-25. Logan had seven points to lead the team.

“We struggled to make our mark early in the game and got behind very quickly,” said Keith. “We had some sloppy mistakes and turnovers, which are major issues against a team like Addison. We have to take better care of the ball and be more aggressive.”

Both teams played Read Mountain on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. Tonight the boys are at Hidden Valley and the girls will host the Eagles in Salem.

On the mats, the Lewis wrestlers beat Read Mountain last Tuesday in Cloverdale, 48-35. Lewis was down by 18 points going into the final six matches but won all six by pin to remain undefeated after three matches.

The Wolverines were scheduled to host Hidden Valley, Christiansburg and North Cross in their home debut Wednesday, but results were too late for publication. Lewis is at Central Academy next Wednesday, December 6.
