The annual event took place at Roanoke College’s Alumni Field.

More than 500 students participated in the annual “Little Feet Meet” Wednesday, April 24 at Roanoke College’s Alumni Field.

Students from 35 area elementary schools stretching from Botetourt County to Salem, their teachers, assistants, and coaches attended the meet and showcased their skills in running, jumping and throwing.

South Salem Elementary School was featured during the opening ceremonies torch lighting ceremony as young Falcons carried in the torch and led the crowd in the Special Olympics Pledge.

Students from Roanoke College, ECPI University, Salem High School and Lord Botetourt High School, as well as community members, and area law enforcement officials served as volunteers and cheerleaders throughout the meet.

More than 500 students participated in the event.

For the students with disabilities, the Little Feet Meet events serve as a public celebration of meeting key developmental and social milestones, organizer said.

Students without disabilities practice and compete with their team and serve as super fans. Together, these kids and their teachers are changing the game, creating a new space for students to form friendships based on shared values versus differences. Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools use sports to develop school communities where youth are agents of change. They are fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for students with intellectual disabilities.

Community partners for the event include Roanoke College, Public Schools in the Roanoke Valley, ECPI University, Community Foundation of Western Virginia, Hall Community Services, Delta Dental and Freedom First.
