Roanoke College junior Evan Parks was named the ODAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week after a strong performance for the Maroons.
Parks started and threw the first three innings in a 9-1 win over Guilford. He gave up one run on four hits without a walk and three strikeouts.
He was stellar in his second start of the week, pitching into the 10th inning in the Maroons 3-2 win over nationally 13th-ranked Shenandoah University in 10 innings. Parks gave up two runs on four hits in nine innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Parks kept SU off the scoreboard until a two-run homer in the ninth inning. After a lead-off walk, he set down seven batters in a row and then enjoyed a run of eight straight outs into the sixth inning. He again set down eight straight Hornets before a lead-off walk in the ninth. For the season, Parks owns a 3.86 ERA with seven walks and 25 strikeouts in 25.2 innings of work.
Saturday’s sweep of Shenandoah Saturday at Salem Memorial Ballpark lifted the Maroons to 14-6 on the season and 7-3 in the ODAC. The bottom of the 10th inning rally started when Will Smith doubled off the leftfield wall and advanced to third on a throwing error. Mason Staz then delivered the game winning RBI on a single to right for the 3-2, extra-inning, win.
The Maroons took an 11-8 win in the nightcap. Will Merriken was 3 for 6 with two runs and an RBI while Tyler De Meo went 3 for 4 with a run and RBI. Carter Plunkett, Gavin Kandrick, and Conner Butler each had two hits. Will Turner was credited with the win, pitching two and a third innings, giving up two hits and a run. Aiden Kuhle got the save by striking out four of the five batters he faced.
The Maroons were at Averett Tuesday and home to Emory & Henry Wednesday but results were too late for publication. This Saturday they travel to Bridgewater for a noon doubleheader, then return home to host Ferrum on Tuesday.
